third update Ondoy Typhoon Manila Philippines

Yesterday, September 30 my wife and I had to go to Quezon City. We were passing Marikina to go there. Half way we were ordered to take an other route because they had closed the road. Probably because this road was passing the part of Marikina (provident village) what has been flooded the worst.
We were directed through Rizal street going to Marcos High Way.
Along this street, were water has been flooding also about 1 meter or more and which is parallel to Marikina River, we have seen a lot of devastated citizens trying to clean their houses, dry their belongings like furniture, matresses and clothes. Businesses, smal and big having their office furniture outside on the sidewalk to dry. Some banks having their paper administration outside to dry. Other stores have thrown away a lot of their merchandise because it was not sellable anymore. In the side streets a same view, sometimes worse. Still open lots are filled with garbage and debris left there by the flood.
On the side of the street large piles with debris, garbage and mud to be taken away in the coming days, weeks, months…… I doubt if this cleaning can be done in a few weeks. There is so much to do…. Tons of garbage, debris and mud needs to be taken away from the streets. This might take weeks to finish.
Marikina River is about 100 meters from this Street, and under normal circumstances 15 or more meters lower. Can you imagine the quantity of water flowing through this river ? 16 or more meters above normal level, with a very strong current ?????

Today, october 1, the situation has not changed much in several other areas.

As another storm barrels into the Philippines, many communities in the Mega Manila area remain underwater, unreached or under-reported. Five days after tropical storm ‘Ondoy’ dumped a record amount of rain on the metropolis, the full extent of the disaster is still unfolding.

Parts of Marikina and Pasig in Metro Manila and the provinces of Bulacan, Laguna and Rizal remained flooded, forcing hundreds of thousands of residents to remain in evacuation centers.

In Cavite, the floods have subsided but residents were still cleaning up the mess and depending on relief supplies.

A report by the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said floodwaters in Marikina had receded in most areas but the damage to houses was extensive, while roads leading to the banks of the Marikina River were impassable due to debris and rubble.
Nearly the entire community of Barangay Silangan in Quezon City, where 31 were killed in the storm, remains in the barangay gym and other evacuation centers after the deluge destroyed most of the houses.

Barangays Maybunga, Pinagbuhatan, and Palatiw in Pasig were still underwater, while eight out of nine barangays in Muntinlupa were also still flooded, especially Tunasan, Poblacion, and Putatan.

The NDCC also said nine out of ten barangays in Pateros were also still submerged in floodwater. In Taguig, 24 out of 28 barangays suffered the same fate.

Among those still flooded is the Pag-IBIG Homes in Cainta, Rizal. Cainta was among the towns that bore the brunt of flooding last Saturday following record rainfall that weather officials described as the worst in living memory.

And a new typhoon (Pepeng or Parma) is on its way to strike again ………
Friday october 2, disaster number 2 ??????

Im hoping that there is a chance to recover and people to get to safety before the next storm hits.. I think the death toll is badly under stated by the government although im well aware of how difficult getting a realistic count is and there are other priorities my biggest worry would be the disease that is likely to follow unless the mop up is done with speed.

      Hi Matt,
With a death count of around 300 (officially) people keep on smiling and do as if nothing happend. They are still cleaning houses and furniture and just make a small detour around the large piles of garbage and debris in the streets.
Filipinos recover fast from this kind of calamities. The only problem is the garbage annd debris in the streets. This might cause sicknesses and they probably are not fully aware of that. The just leave their children playing in this garbage or swim in the dirty waters.

I heard that the next storm is on his way, but still far. It will be here second half of this week. If it’s going to hit the Metro Manila, is not sure. We have to wait and see……
