getting a tan in the Philippines

Lots of people in Europe and America are spending their vacation in a warmer and sunnier region than the one they are living in. People in northern Europe for example, like to spend their vacation in southern European countries like Spain, Italy and Greece. In America they like to go to Florida or California and even to Mexico. The main purpose is enjoying the good weather and getting a darker skin.
Lots of people even visit tanning studios or have such equipment at home to get a tan during the dark winter months. Having a tan is fashion in Europe and America.
But not in the Philippines. Filipino women like to use creams and lotions to have a paler skin. On TV, lots of commercials are shown for different brands of these cremes and lotions to make the skin lighter of color until almost white. So you can see lots of women with a unusual pale skin. Even bakla (that’s how gay in the Philippines are called) using it. I’m told that the change of the skin color is only temporary, because the skin darkens after stopping the treatment. The same with tanning cremes used in Europe an America, here the skin color lightens after the treatment.

I do not understand those people. Neither in Europe and America, but also not in the Philippines. The products are costing a lot of money and are lasting only limited time. And it’s not only that, there are also cheaper products available in 2nd class stores and markets. These products are dangerous to the skin.

Having more pigment in the skin protects from heavy sun. So Filipinos are better protected against the strong light of the sun and never get a sun burn. If their skin will be lighter in color they might be more vulnerable for sun burn.
In Europe and America people get warned that too much direct sunlight and sun bathing might cause skin cancer. Yet they want to have a tan. The darker the better.

Due to evolution men have developed their skin color. In areas with a lot of sun people become darker of color. In areas with limited sun people stay white. It’s a fact. So just accept the fact.

On the other hand, many white men like to have a tanned girlfriend or wife. And brown men like to get married to white women. Maybe that’s the reason Asian women like a paler skin color? So the get chosen by their country men?

Nobody likes to admit it, but it started when the late Michael Jackson suddenly became pale. Officials said that he had a skin disease. I have never believed that story. The man was just tired of having a dark skin color and wanted to be white. In the process he got his face (nose) misshapen. True MJ fans might get angry now, but I think this man was mad, and not only for the reason of changing his skin color.
The official statement about this question said that he was suffering from vertiligo, a skin disease. Check about Vitiligo HERE.

For myself, I am living here now a little over one year. My skin has colored only a little because I protect my skin as much as possible. If I have to go out when the sun is shining very strong, I always bring an umbrella so I am in the shade. Sitting outside in the sun > I never do that. Parts of my body that are always covered with clothes are still white like I was living in the Netherlands. And I like it this way ;-)
